Updates and Events for the week of January 20-24. 2025

Federal Impact Aid Form:

In order to receive federal aid that is available to school districts that have a high percentage of students whose parents/guardians work on federal property, all parents are requested to complete the Federal Impact Aid Survey Form.  A paper copy was sent home with all students on Wednesday, January 15.  A digital copy may be found here; https://drive.google.com/file/d/1RuG2jUYMuC6h02ojydIG5Egf1CAfKeWk/view?usp=sharing

Yearbook Cover Contest:

Anyone interested in designing this year’s yearbook cover should see Mrs. Miller in room 117 for

rules and paper. The winning cover art will grace the cover! All cover art is due February 13th!

 

Spelling Bee:

Congratulations to Everlee Davis, Jace Peters, and Sydney Ranz who were the top three finishers in the 5th grade spelling bee.  They will go on to represent the fifth grade class in the Wesclin Middle School bee on Wednesday, January 29..  The winner of the school spelling bee will go on to compete at the county level.

 

Plastic Water Bottles:

In preparation for an upcoming Science activity, we are in need of clean, empty one- or two-liter plastic bottles with the lids.  If you have any you would like to donate, just send them in to Mr. Brandmeyer.  Thank you in advance!

 

Support Committee Glo Bingo & Basket Auction:

The Wesclin Support Committee will be holding a silent basket auction in conjunction with Glo Bingo on Saturday, March 1, 2025.  Each grade level will be collecting items for 3 themed baskets for the raffle.  The fifth grade’s baskets’ themes will be Coffee, Wesclin Gear, and Movie Night.  Suggested donations could include:

Cash donations will also be accepted  and use to purchase additional items for the baskets.  Any donations may be sent in with your child and given to the homeroom teacher.  All proceeds will will go to support various projects around the school and in the classrooms.

  • Send in your completed paper ticket + payment to any Wesclin school (just pop it in an envelope marked 'WMS Support Committee').

  • Drawing Date: GRAND Prize drawn March 1, 2025 at the New Baden American Legion, with $20 drawings every month on the 15th leading up to it!

Classroom Prize Challenge! 

As an added incentive, we will be sponsoring a pizza party for the WMS Homeroom that returns the most raffle tickets! Make sure you drop your child's Homeroom teacher's name on the paper ticket or the Venmo to be included.

 

Baseball Camp:

To prepare for the upcoming baseball season, the Wesclin High School baseball staff will be hosting a skills camp on Sunday, February 23.  Grades 1-4 may attend from 11:00-1:30, and grades 5-8 may attend from 2:00-4:30.  Past and present members of the high school baseball team will offer training on various skills.  The cost to attend is $50 for the first camper and $25 for each additional camper.  To register, fill out the form at https://forms.gle/Zmky4wUTb1QLAgEg6.

 

 

2024-2025 Yearbooks:

Yearbooks for the 2024-2025 school year are on sale now.  Prices start at $22.00 with additional packages and accessories available for an additional price.  You can scan the QR code that was sent home on the flyer or go to https://www.jostens.com/apps/store/productBrowse/2712090/Wesclin-Middle-School/2025-Yearbook/2024090412152699062/CATALOG_SHOP/ to order your copy.

 

Candy Cart:

Fifth graders will have an opportunity to shop from the Candy Cart at the end of the day on the last Friday of each month.  Soda and candy are $2 and chips and Ring Pops are $1.  

 

Water Bottles and Snacks:

Students may bring a small snack to have after their 2nd Hour class each day.  2nd Hour ends at 9:43.  If your child would like to bring a water bottle, he/she may keep it in his/her locker until snack time.  WATER BOTTLES SHOULD CONTAIN WATER ONLY.  Please be sure to take the bottle home each night to be cleaned.  Snacks should be healthier snacks.  Candy will not be considered an acceptable snack.

 

Warrior Wednesdays:

Each Wednesday has been designated as “Warrior Wednesday.”  Be sure to show your school pride by wearing your Wesclin gear  (no hats, please!).  Students and their families are also encouraged to come out and support the various teams throughout the year.  

Honor Society is doing a friendly homeroom competition for all grade levels! Each Wednesday during homeroom, we will tally how many students are wearing Warrior gear. At the end of each month, Honor Society will reward the homeroom who had the best school pride all month with a reward. These could be donuts, pizza, ski, etc.  Go Warriors!

Grammar Spotlight: Verb Tenses, Quotations, and Interjections

Spelling: Final schwa + /l/ Words 

Mrs. Garcia’s Reading: We started reading Sarah Plain and Tall. Next week, we will be reading chapter 3-4 and working on comprehension and vocabulary. We will have weekly vocabulary quizzes and comprehension checks every other week starting next week. We will also continue using Sonday System 2 for phonics/spelling, along with specific skills focus. 

*Our library time will be 1/21/25, please make sure students have their books at school.

 

Science

Mr. Brandmeyer: Lesson 2-5: How Do People’s Everyday Lives Affect Earth’s Systems?; Assessment Thursday, January 23

 

Math

Mrs. Haar, Mrs. Luis, and Mrs. Ross:  We will continue in Unit 3 (More Decimals and Fractions) Lesson 17 - Divide Decimals.  Look for our first Mid-Unit Assessment over this Unit on Thursday, January 30th.  Students will also complete their My Path lessons in class.  

Mrs. Garcia: Next week we will begin reviewing our multiplication facts and work on fluency. 

 

Social Studies

Mrs. Berkemann:  We will be comparing the New England, Middle, and Southern Colonial Regions.  We will read about Pennsylvania, Maryland,  and Georgia colonies.  Lesson 7 Test is scheduled for Friday, January 24th.
