Wesclin Vocational Classes Have Sawmill Guest Speaker
By: Emma Sanchez
On Wednesday, October 8th the Wesclin vocational classes welcomed guest speaker, Bert Elliott. Bert showed the students how to use a gas powered sawmill, as he demonstrated on a Cypress tree. Mr. Elliott donated lumber to Mr. Burcham’s classes. He has been using his 1985 model sawmill for about 5 years now. His saw mill was worth $7,000 back in the day. Each blade is about $24 a piece, and can be sharpened up to 5 times before needing to buy a new one. Today, a hydraulic sawmill would be around $28,000. Bert told the students how to look for a “good” log, “You look for no radio track, holes, look for a tight log.” It takes him from three to four hours to cut a good sized log .Bert said , “I like to be the first one to see what Mother Nature made. “He enjoys doing this as a hobby. “I wouldn’t mind cutting up logs with a portable saw mill to make some money. It seems like a good hobby,” said senior Jordan Pratt.
